Final Project Proposal
For my final project I want to explore architecture in Manhattan and Brooklyn, comparing architecture of buildings with architecture of parks and green areas. I will be looking at places like Central Park, Prospect Park, and McCarren Park and comparing those to visually similar or visually different architectural structures. It will be a study of the different ways public space is used, and a look...

First Iteration of Alexis Penney Interview
For the midterm I recreated an opening sequence for the 2003 film Party Monster. I had a lot of fun making this video, so I know you’ll have fun watching!
The opening sequence for “House” the 7th season by Digital Kitchen caught my eye immediately. It’s visceral, surreal imagery paired with Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” track immerses the viewer into another world. The flickering and fading effects are really interesting to look at, and I had to pause and replay the video a lot to see exactly what was happening. They are so well...
This is a funny video introducing a new National Geographic series about cops who hunt poachers. That’s right, they’re poacher poachers. So naturally, they got creative and played on the fact that the poachers are being hunted by comparing this to a squirrel trying to trap two backwoods, gun toting men. They use diegetic text in the first shot to set up the scene and tell us what were watching....
This opening sequence for the HBO series True Blood is one of my favorites. It was made by Digital Kitchen using mostly hand-made shots and a few found shots. It is especially amazing because of their ability to convey a sense of the major themes and feel of the TV show, without actually showing any vampires or blood. Shots of religious rituals like baptism, decaying animals, swamps, and...

Koyaanisqatsi
This film was very beautiful in its juxtapositions between nature and the man made. Especially interesting were the tall building shots against the tall rock forms in the landscape shots of what I assume was the Grand Canyon. I also loved the connection between water, the ocean and the sky and clouds. When shots of the clouds and fog rolling over mountain tops were sped up they looked and felt...

La Jetee
To show moments of pain the camera zoomed in.
Repetition was used to create a sense of time.
Dramatic lighting from above was used to create a deathly effect on the face of the man. His face appeared to be a skull.
In happy scenes the lighting was bright and contrast not so great. In sad or scary scenes the lighting was dark, with much contrast.
The evil scientist/doctors were shot from below...
10 Things I Learned
1. Shoot facing away from direct light or sunlight to prevent glare.
2. Zooming looks unnatural, moving the camera mimics the human eye.
3. Pan towards subject while zooming out or vice versa to create a dramatic effect.
4. If shooting a subject in the mirror, angle the camera so as not to expose its reflection in the shot.
5. Shoot many takes and different angles of the same shot to have more...
